Yellowknife in December 2026: The Darkest Month Is the Aurora Month

In December the sun does something visitors never quite believe until they watch it. It clears the horizon around ten in the morning, stays low enough that your shadow never shortens, drags an orange line along the snowbanks for five hours, and then quits. What follows is the reason people fly here. Real black sky, hours of it, over a frozen lake with almost nothing lit on the far shore. Is December a good month to visit Yellowknife?

Yes, if the aurora is why you are coming. December is the darkest month of the Yellowknife year, with a daily mean of -21.8C and about five hours of daylight in mid-month. The winter viewing season is fully open, winter tours operate on their individual schedules, and the night gives you close to thirteen hours of genuine darkness.

December trades daylight for darkness. You will not stack three daytime activities into one afternoon the way a March visitor can. What you get instead is a viewing window that opens early and does not close until the small hours, which matters when the deciding factor on any night is a passing cloud bank.

How cold is Yellowknife in December?

Genuinely cold, and I would rather say so plainly. Environment Canada normals put December's daily mean at -21.8C, average highs at -18.0C and average lows at -25.6C. That is roughly nine degrees colder than November and within a few degrees of January, the coldest month. Nights below -20 are routine, and -30 happens.

The number that actually governs your trip is not the daily mean, it is the temperature at eleven at night on a frozen lake with a breeze coming across it. Two things make this survivable. The air is dry, so -25 here does not feel like -10 in a damp coastal city. And everything the operators run is built around heat: heated vans between viewpoints, heated huts on the fishing tours, hot drinks on the ice. Warm breaks and suitable clothing help, but exposure time, wind and the forecast still matter.

How much daylight does Yellowknife get in December?

About five hours in the middle of the month. On December 15 the sun rises at 09:57 and sets at 15:07, giving 5 hours 9 minutes of daylight, easing down to roughly 5 hours 5 minutes at the solstice. There is no polar night here. The sun rises every single day of December.

Yellowknife sits at about 62.45N, roughly 400 km south of the Arctic Circle, which is exactly why the sun keeps showing up. Notice that daylight and true darkness do not add up to twenty-four hours. The gap is twilight, long and blue at each end of the day, when the snow turns the colour of steel. Photographers plan around it. Everyone else just notices the town looks unreal at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Are the Yellowknife northern lights in December at their best?

December sits inside the strongest stretch of the winter viewing season. Yellowknife lies directly under the auroral oval, where the lights appear up to 240 nights a year, but no stay comes with a guaranteed sighting. December does not create more aurora, it simply gives the oval far more dark hours to perform in.

Because we sit under the oval already, a low Kp reading with clear sky is often plenty here, the opposite of what visitors from southern Canada expect. Cloud cover, not geomagnetic activity, usually decides your night.

What is actually running in December in Yellowknife?

Nearly everything winter offers, with one timing catch. Aurora hunts, dog sledding, snowmobiling and city tours publish December departures; the verified ice-fishing schedule starts December 15, subject to conditions. Layers you own or layers you rent, but not the coat you brought from home. The first-timer mistake here is underdressing: a city winter jacket fails fast at -25 while standing still on a lake. What should you know before booking December in Yellowknife?

Two things. The second half of December carries Christmas and New Year travel on top of aurora season, so coordinate flights, accommodation and tours for your exact dates. And prices and availability move constantly, so the live listings are the only honest source for both.
